Find secluded spot in home for child's private play area

By Carole Sanetti
Special to The Advertiser

Young children love to nest. Finding a small spot somewhere, very private, to look at books or listen to tapes, a quiet spot where no one can disturb them, can be a little one’s idea of heaven.

Most homes aren’t big enough to be able to put an area aside just for this purpose. If, however, you’ve got an old solid color sheet and a card table, your youngster can have small, temporary space for himself or herself.

Give your little ones the sheet and some washable markers or paints. Let them decorate the sheet any way they choose. When they are finished, open the card table in their room or somewhere out of the way, drape the decorated sheet over it, and voila! Your child has a home away from - but still inside - home!

If children are going to be involved in very active play with this tent, it is a good idea to anchor the sheet on top of the table with some double-sided tape or buttons of tape.

Children need to learn to be creative problem solvers. Putting an old sheet and a table together to make something different from their intended use involves creativity, and being able to use materials creatively is a helpful tool in their repertoire of creative skills.
