Chai case points to immigration law flaws
Hawai'i's members of Congress must make reform of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act a top priority. In the meantime, they might ask why chef Chai Chaowasaree, who clearly has demonstrated a desire to stay and work in Hawai'i, is being held in jail as a potential "flight risk."

Ethics chief pay should not be up to legislators
If legislators feel they do not want the Ethics Commission to set the salary for its executive director, then an alternative would be to tie that salary to the pay for Cabinet directors or their deputies. This is not so much about how much the ethics director should be paid, but rather about where the salary controls should rest. The choice should be obvious.
