Fun, learning at two fairs

Hahaione Elementary School will hold its annual STEPS fair and its Family Fun Fair together on March 9 on the school grounds.

STEPS — Science & Technology Exploring Possibilities by Students — is an event where students, especially in the upper grades, show off their knowledge with science projects ranging from inventions to class murals.

The school needs volunteers to share expertise in science or technology from March 7 to 14. Volunteers also are needed to help the school set up the science/

technology displays on March 8 and to take them down on March 14.

The fun fair is sponsored by the Parent-Teacher-Student Association, which is seeking volunteers needed to help on the day of the fair and to find donations.

For more information call the school’s Parent Community Networking Center facilitator Johnette Maielua at 397-5822.

The town cleanup is an activity of Project LEADER, an environmental initiative started several years ago with Hawaiian Electric Co.

It is a cooperative effort by the schools' student councils and Leilehua's student leaders, who hope to involve elected officials, Department of Education staff and administrators, as well as business people and the military.

Theme park on the agenda

Bruce Coppa, with Island Paradise Inc., will discuss the proposed Kapolei theme park at the next Kapolei Rotary Club meeting, at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the Kapolei High School faculty/staff lounge.

The company announced its plans for the $150 million Hawaiian theme park, including a full-size roller coaster, in October.

Plans also include an entertainment amphitheater, themed rides, cultural exhibits, restaurants and retail shops.

The park would employ about 1,100 people, 700 of them full time. Planners estimate that 4,000 guests would visit the park daily, with up to 8,000 on peak days.

The meeting costs $7 and includes a buffet breakfast.
