Fresno State batted around in a four-run seventh inning to beat Hawaii, 6-2, in Western Athletic Conference baseball last night at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.
Tony Guzman hit a solo home run off UH starter Jeff Coleman (1-2) to start the seventh, which was capped by Casey McGehees three-run homer off reliever Gavin Garrick.
The series continues at 11 a.m. Hawaii time today.
"It was first game on the road syndrome," UH coach Carl Furutani said. "Definitely Sacramento (State) would have helped us," Furutani said of the non-conference game that was canceled by rain earlier last week. The Rainbows (7-6, 2-2) were to use the game to get accustomed to playing on the road.
Fresno State starting pitcher Zach Minor (2-1) allowed four hits and two unearned runs, and hit three batters in 7 1/3 innings.
Ben Fritz replaced him with runners at first and second and a 6-2 lead in the eighth inning. After walking Ryan Anderson to load the bases, bringing up the tying run to the plate, Fritz struck out Chad Boudon and Brian Bock to end a Rainbow threat. He also pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.
Josh Labandeira and Brad Harper had two hits each for the Bulldogs (8-5, 3-1).
