Island Style
Makeup artists reveal secrets

By Paula Rath
Advertiser Island Style Writer

Soft, shimmery, illuminating. Those are the buzz words for the makeup of the moment. From runway to real way, it’s all about pretty in pink.

Island Style asked makeup artists — national and local — for their three makeup "must-haves" as we move into spring.

You don’t need to discard everything in your makeup kit, but sometimes just a couple of additions can bring a face right up to date.

Here’s what the professionals suggested:

Cathy Bogatin, Bobbi Brown
Neiman Marcus

  1. "Opal anything: lip gloss, nail enamel, sparkledust (powder) for eyes and cheeks."
  2. A cream stick blush in a soft pink. Give yourself a big smile and apply to the apples of your cheeks.
  3. Foundation with an SPF of 15 to help stave off sun damage. "In Hawaii, it’s a must."

Gerry Brown
Stylist, Paul Brown

  1. "You can’t make a mistake with a cream or gel blush. It’s sheer and easy to work with. You can wear it on bare skin or over foundation." To apply: start at the front of the face, where the apple is. Her favorites: "Bloom" and "Sweet Tart" cream sticks by Paul Brown, Stila convertible color and Clinique cream oil-free blush.
  2. Sheer rose or pink lip gloss.
  3. A wash of shimmer all over the skin.

Sylvie Chantecaille
Founder of Chantecaille cosmetics

  1. "A sheer, soft red lip gloss like Campari’ makes anyone look fresh and up.’ " But beware of thick lip liner, she warned. "It’s so passe."
  2. A botanical moisturizer such as Flower Harmonizing Cream Aromacologie. Why botanicals? "It’s the same difference as eating living fruit versus taking a vitamin pill; the fruit has more energy and vitality and works with the human body to nourish it."
  3. A foundation that takes advantage of the new technology. "Textures and pigments are all changed now. It should be invisible or don’t use it." Her favorite? "Real Skin."

Tania deJesus
Makeup artist, Kathy Mueller Agency

  1. Shu Uemura’s eyelash curler. "Curly eyelashes work for absolutely everyone. They open up the eye and give it a brighter look."
  2. "L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara makes lashes full and thick, and the waterproof version holds the curl and stays put."
  3. MAC Lip Glass can be mixed with any spring color to add shimmer.

Curtis Lee
Cosmetics merchandise manager, Liberty House

  1. A sheer lip gloss, especially in pink.
  2. "Anything pink for eyes, cheeks or lips, in sheer or matte. Every company has new pinks on the market."
  3. "A light-deflecting, skin-illuminating foundation or powder such as Prescriptive Magic (they pioneered it), Lauder Spotlight or the new Shiseido foundation or powder."

E’Jay Maldonado
Stylist and trainer, Sephora

  1. "A multipurpose stain because it can be used to freshen up lips, eyes and cheeks. BeneTint was the first to make it, but now Lorac has four shades."
  2. "Black eyeliner is back, but it is precise. Either use a cake intensified by water or a wax pencil like Anna Sui’s, Givenchy’s or Max Factor’s."
  3. "Anything that adds shimmer will revamp all your old colors. Find a soft shimmer that adjusts to light, as opposed to a frost. Frost is metallic-looking while a shimmer is prismatic."

Eric Pai
Stylist, Max Bravo

  1. "A good mascara that stays on your lashes and not all over your face. I love Lancome Aquacils. It stays put and feels beautiful."
  2. "Something fresh like a pink or orange blush in a pot that can be used for eyes, lips and cheeks. It warms up the whole face."
  3. A lip color that will stay moist, with MAC Lip Glass over it.

Tracy S.
Stylist, Chop salon

  1. "A lengthening mascara because it draws open your eyes, especially if you’re not using shadow." Her favorite? Maybelline’s Illegal Lengths.
  2. A light neutral lip gloss like MAC’s Lip Glass or a Chanel shimmer gloss.
  3. Eyebrow shadow and brush. "You don’t want a contrast between your brows and your hair. If you’re lightening your hair, consider lightening your brows, too, either with makeup or dye."

Dawn Stultz
National makeup artist, Trish McEvoy

  1. A face shine stick for cheeks, eyes and lips. "It’s clean, colorful, feminine and not a lot of makeup. Used with a finger, I call it taxi cab makeup.’ "
  2. Luxury Lacquer Gloss in a refillable compact. "In red or berry, it gives a sheer, transparent lip, almost like a Popsicle stain."
  3. Brush No. 11 for eyeliner. "You can achieve any look, from diva to minimalist, with this brush and a triple pigment eye shadow.

"To apply eyeliner on the eyelid: with your chin up, looking down into the mirror, place brush on top of your lashes. Begin at the outer corner, keeping the handle of the brush parallel to your cheek. Press firmly but gently along the lash line.

"The key is to hold the brush like a lollipop, not a pencil. To line the lower lashes: holding your chin down, looking up into the mirror, hold brush like a pencil and place it at the outer corner of your eye and place tip of brush right under lower lashes.

"Gently press along the lash line. Liner should not go beyond lashes."

Makeup highlights

A dust of shimmer, a shine on the lip, a little liner at the eye — a new spring look needn't be too costly in time, effort, or currency.

The eyes: Black eyeliner is back, but it's precise. Use a cake liner intensified by water or a wax pencil.

The cheeks: Cheeks are sheer and glowing. Choose a soft cream or gel blush, in a pot or a stick.

The lips: No matte lips! Only a sheer lip gloss or stain, preferably pink. Beware of bold lip liners — they're passe.
