An event for Hawaii businesses will be held in conjunction with the Asian Development Bank board of governors meeting in Honolulu in May.
The Hawaii Business Forum, with the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Pacific/
Hawaii Export Council, said meetings targeted for local business interest, and social events, will be held May 8. Hawaii business people who register also can attend many of the banks meetings and social functions May 7-11 at the Hawaii Convention Center.
Headquartered in Manila, the Asian Development Bank is a finance institution owned by 60 member nations. It underwrites about $6 billion worth of development projects a year in Asia and the South Pacific, with the chief goal of reducing poverty.
Its general meeting in Honolulu is expected to attract about 3,000 participants, including finance ministers of most member countries. As head of state of the host country, President Bush has been invited to open the event, but it is not known whether he will attend.
Representatives of many large nongovernmental organizations will attend as guests, but most meetings will not be open to the public.
Featured speakers at the May 8 event include Derek Williams, executive vice president, Asia-Pacific, Oracle Corp., and Tom Plate, a columnist who writes about Asia and the Pacific for The Advertiser.
Officials from the ADB involved with procurement and business development opportunities also will address Hawaii participants.
The cost to attend is $125 and the registration deadline is March 30.
A section for company exhibits also will include an area featuring Hawaii corporations, economic development organizations and research groups. For information on exhibiting, call the Hawaii Tourism Authority at (808) 973-2255 or e-mail at adb2001@hawaiitourismauthority.org
