Akina to coach at Texas

Duane Akina, a 1975 Punahou School graduate and a finalist for the University of Hawaii football head coaching job in 1998, has left Arizona to become an assistant at the University of Texas.

Akina was the only coach retained when John Mackovic was named to replace Dick Tomey as Arizona’s head coach in December.

Akina had been associate head coach and defensive coordinator under Tomey, who resigned after the end of the season. Akina also was an assistant at UH from 1981-85 when Tomey was head coach.

Akina will coach the secondary at Texas.

Chaminade sweeps in softball

Melissa Marquez and Kelly Kaaihili pitched one-hitters as Chaminade swept Montana State-Billings, 9-0 and 8-0, yesterday at Cartwright Field.

Marquez struck out eight and Kaaihili struck out six.

Chris Pascua hit a three-run home run in the second game.
