Pats Island Delights in Pearl City is an oasis of made-in-Hawaii products. Owner Pat Ohta is always seeking out local manufacturers. For three years, Ohta has been stocking Azookie Bean Cookies from Shishido Manju Co. on Maui. Known for their fresh mochi and manju, Shishido is branching out into new products, with the younger Elton Shishido stepping in to take over for parents Garnett and Alice Shishido. While the crisp and crumbly Azookie Bean Cookies dont have a distinctive bean flavor, their reddish brown hue is a novelty. An 8-ounce package is $3.25.
Under the Aunty Holly brand, Ohta carries bagel chips - savory garlic and sweet cinnamon sugar flavored ones - that are very crunchy and crisp.
Pats Island Delights is at 98-450 Kamehameha Highway in the Waiau Center. Open from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Mon.-Fri., Sat. til 5 p.m. and Sun. til 4 p.m. 484-8808.
Baby veggies
The cutest baby vegetables - green summer squash, zucchini, carrots, candy and golden beets - are available at R. Field at Foodland Beretania. They are being flown in from a Mexican grower in vacuum packaging that helps to extend their shelf life. Expect to pay $6-$8 a pound. Jim Growney of Makiki has been experimenting with them and is a fan. "We cook them in a little broth, blanch them and then saute them. They are lovely on a plate and great for stir-fries because you can use them whole."
