Aloha Sung Ja Cho, consulate worker, dead at 63

Aloha Sung Ja Cho, an administrator with the South Korean Consulate in Hawaii, died Dec. 18 in Los Angeles. She was 63.

Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea, on May 14, 1937. After graduating from E Hwa University in Seoul, she served as an educational missionary in Pakistan.

In 1971, Cho moved to Honolulu to work at the South Korean Consulate. She began as a secretary and later became an administrator, working with 12 different consuls general.

"She was like a mother figure there," said friend, Jennifer Kim.

Cho is survived by her brother, Gary. Her ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony Saturday off Diamond Head.
