Cal Poly-SLO hires UH's Seumalo as defensive line coach

Joe Seumalo, a graduate assistant coach at the University of Hawaii the past two years and former Rainbow standout, has been named defensive line coach at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

Seumalo will assist Rich Ellerson, a former Arizona and UH defensive coordinator, who was named the Mustangs’ head coach.

Seumalo played defensive line for UH between 1985 and 88 where he was a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection a a senior.

Seumalo played five seasons in the Canadian Football League, where he began his coaching career at British Columbia.

"Joe is an outstanding coach and is one of the first guys I talked to when I got the job," Ellerson said.


TENNIS

Challenge qualifier: Hawaii tennis players will have an opportunity this weekend to try and qualify for the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger, a world-class men’s event to be held Jan. 23-28 on the Big Island.

Friday to Sunday, a "pre-qualifier," sanctioned by the U.S. Tennis Association Hawaii Pacific Section, will be at Waikoloa. The fee to enter is $30. The winner gets a wild card entry into the qualifying rounds of the Challenger, Jan. 21-22. The top four players in the Challenger qualifier advance to the 32-man main draw, Jan. 23-28. Seeded players in the main draw will include early-round losers from the Australian Open.

A Pro-Am to benefit the Hawaii Pacific Tennis Foundation will be Friday, Jan. 26, at Waikoloa. The round-robin doubles event will include participating Challenger players.
