Aloha Airlines fined over fare ads

Advertiser Staff and Wire Services

Aloha Airlines has been fined $10,000 by federal transportation officials for what was called deceptive advertising practices.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said on Feb. 9 that Aloha unfairly advertised $99 promotional fares between Hawaii and Las Vegas without properly noting that taxes and fees would be added to the price of the ticket. Taxes and fees, which vary depending on origin of the trip, can total as much as $30, Aloha spokeswoman Julie King said.

King said when the issue was brought to Aloha’s attention, the airline sent letters to passengers detailing the nature and amount of the necessary taxes. People who turned in their award certificates to use the fare before the airline notified them did not have to pay the taxes, King said. Aloha offered the special fares to introduce its new Las Vegas service.
