Honolulu police yesterday arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with a fire that caused about $2,000 in damage to a Kailua church in January.
An arsonist set the fire at St. Christophers Episcopal Church, 94 N. Kainalu Drive, the evening of Jan. 6, police said.
Police arrested the man on suspicion of second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal property damage on Monday at the Tripler Army Medical Center. The man, who has no local address, has not been charged.
Church officials said oil from a wall-mounted candle lamp apparently was poured on a Nativity scene and then set fire. The flames quickly spread to the church altar.
Before the fire could cause any more damage, it was discovered by a church worker who saw smoke as she pulled into the churchs parking lot.
Police were joined in the investigation by federal investigators because the fire involved a church.
