Man held in slaying taken to hospital

Advertiser Staff

A 43-year-old man charged with killing a woman at Fort Street Mall was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center early yesterday after complaining of illness.

Joseph G. Jackson was being transported to District Court from the main police cellblock when he told officers he was not feeling well.

Once he arrived at District Court, state officers agreed to take Jackson to the hospital. He had been scheduled for an appearance before District Judge Leslie Ann Hayashi for charges in connection with the death of Brenda Caves.

According to a affidavit filed at District Court by homicide Det. Allan Castro, Jackson’s girlfriend, Jasmine Kaiser, told police she saw Jackson grab Caves by the front of her throat during an argument Wednesday morning in front of the Ross Dress for Less store at Fort Street Mall. Kaiser said Jackson held Caves’ throat for several seconds while she was on the ground, according to the affidavit.

Caves was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined she was strangled.

Jackson and Caves had been arguing over alcohol, police said. Jackson has been charged with manslaughter and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Correction: Toyoki Caves says her daughter, Brenda Caves had been living with her in Kaneohe. Police had said the woman was homeless.
