Derrick Low of 'Iolani is believed to be the first freshman basketball player chosen ILH Player of the Year. |
Eventually, the top 100 current freshmen and sophomores in the United States will be invited.
"Were weeding through 1,500 recommendations, and he is one of the first 12 to get an invitation," said Don Crenshaw, director of high school basketball for Nike.
Low, who will turn 15 on March 21, was selected on the all-tournament team of the state basketball championships Feb. 24 after leading Iolani to second place. He is believed to be the first freshman ever chosen as Player of the Year in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. He led the league in scoring with a 15.5 points-per-game average and had a high game of 27 points.
Crenshaw, who travels the nation evaluating talent, has seen Low play since he was a seventh-grader at Iolani. "I came to the Iolani tournament (which Nike sponsors) and they told me I had to see this kid, so I watched him at practice," Crenshaw said.
"Hes a talented young man in basketball terms. He shoots the ball well, handles the ball well, and he appears to have a lot of desire to be an outstanding player."
