Rice rallies to beat UH-Hilo in 10th, 9-7

Nationally ranked Rice rallied for two runs in the 10th inning last night to defeat Hawaii-Hilo, 9-7, in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game at Wong Stadium.

Jesse Roman doubled in a run, then scored on a sacrifice fly in the extra inning as No. 2 Rice (16-3 overall, 6-0 WAC) avoided a major upset.

The Vulcans (3-17, 2-10) led 4-0 after five innings, then rallied for three runs in the eighth to tie the score at 7.

Ryan Peterson batted 4 for 5 and drove in two runs, and Mike Hobbs and Brian Rooke had two hits apiece for Hilo.

Hunter Brown and Austin Davis each had three hits and Matt Cunningham drove in three runs for Rice. Reliever Phillip Barzilla (3-1) got the final three outs of the eighth inning and finished with three scoreless innings for the Owls.


SOFTBALL

Seasiders sweep: Summer George pitched a no-hitter and Lyndi Frei hurled a four-hitter as Brigham Young-Hawaii swept a nonconference softball doubleheader from Elizabethtown (Pa.) College yesterday at the BYUH field.

George struck out two and walked five as BYUH won the second game, 7-0. Tami Layton had two hits and three RBIs for the Seasiders, who improved to 7-10.

Frei struck out three and walked two in BYUH’s 1-0 victory in the first game. Holly Harn drove in the game’s only run in the first inning.
