Two accident victims remain hospitalized

Advertiser Staff

A 19-year-old woman and 1 1/2-year-old boy who were injured in a car crash that killed three people Sunday night near the airport remained hospitalized last night.

The woman was in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman declined to release the condition of the boy.

The two were passengers in a 2001 Buick that struck a tree around 11 p.m. Sunday on Koapaka Street. The crash killed three Ewa Beach residents.

Two victims were identified by the medical examiner’s office as Tapelu Levu, 3, and his 2-month-old brother, Pulou Levu. The third victim has not yet been positively identified, but police said she was the boys’ mother, Ruta Levu, 30.

Police said only Ruta Levu, who was driving the car, was wearing a seat belt. None of the children were in a child restraint seat, police said.

Levu’s car was heading east on Koapaka when it went through a stop sign, ran off the road and slammed into a tree. Police said speed was a factor in the accident.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
