Local hiking club offers frequent excursions

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaiian Trail & Mountain Club holds trail maintenance and trail hikes throughout the year.

For hikes, meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 a.m., unless noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044.

A $2 donation is required for each nonmember, age 18 and over. People under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The club does not arrange transportation.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

For information, call 674-1459, 377-5442, 596-4864 or check Web sites www.geocities.com/htmclub/; htmc.u4l.com; or www.webalias.com/htmc/.

The schedule for upcoming maintenance and hikes:

March 17 — Pali Falls (4 miles, novice, graded hillside, Nuuanu Pali): Old Pali Road contours seaward from Pali Lookout and ends just under Pali Highway and continues to the base of a lookout and a small waterfall. Coordinator John Hoover, 528-1206.

March 25 — K¬lepeamoa Ridge (6 miles, advanced, ridge, Niu Valley): Hard breathing to soft needles. Coordinator Grant Oka, 674-1459.

March 31 — Kawaewae (3 miles, intermediate, ridge, Kaneohe): After easy hillside stroll, route quickly moves beyond "novice" category. Views are great and provide different perspective of Kaneohe and the bay. Coordinator Steve Brown, 247-8845.

April 7 — Waimano Tunnels (5 miles, intermediate, contour, Pearl City): Descend into Waimano Valley and connect with the ditch trail. The highlight is a scramble through two tunnels, one long and straight; the other, short and twisting. Bring a flashlight and hat. Coordinator Justin Ohara, 946-2735.
