Punahous Fey plans to leave coaching
Shelley Fey, who coached Punahou to three state girls basketball championships in the past 11 years, announced last night that she would step down at the end of this season.
Fey told a gathering of parents of current players that she wanted to spend more time with her two young children, and to pursue other opportunities at Punahou, where she also teaches elementary school physical education.
Punahou has 10 players, including four starters, back from the team that took third place in last years state tournament. The Buffanblu are 7-0 in preseason games.
Fey, a 1974 graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, was the first woman to coach a state championship basketball team, in 1994. That was Punahous first title in 13 years, and earned her state Coach of the Year honors.
Her teams have qualified for the state tournament all seven years since 1994, adding championships in 1997 and 1998, placing second in 1999 and third in 1995 and 2000. She also won three Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships.
"She has devoted a tremendous amount of time, energy and expertise to Punahous athletic program and always stressed teamwork, good sportsmanship and commitment," co-athletic director Kale Ane said. "We are very proud of her accomplishments; she is a great role model for our female athletes."
Fey is the daughter of Hawaii basketball legend Harry "The Clown" Kahuanui, who served as her assistant until this year.
Mike Taylor, current Punahou girls assistant and former girls head coach at Maryknoll, is expected to be among applicants for Feys position.
