Cindy Ball pitched a three-hitter as the University of Pacific defeated the University of Hawaii, 9-0, in the championship game of the Malihini Softball Tournament.

A crowd of 112 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium saw Ball strike out five and walk one in a game shortened to six innings by the eight-run, mercy rule.

Ball also batted 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Barbara Moody, Natalie Farmer and Adrienne Ratajczak also had two hits apiece as Pacific improved to 19-5 on the season. UOP advanced to the title game by defeating Winthrop (S.C.), 10-1, earlier in the day.

The Wahine (19-8) reached the final by beating Loyola Marymount, 3-1, as Desiree Duran scattered eight hits over 6á innings. Stacie Hirano and Kate Judd each had two hits and an RBI, and Tyree Woodruff batted 2-for-3 to lead Hawaii.

In other games, Loyola Marymount beat Stetson (Deland, Fla.), 4-2, and Winthrop defeated Western Illinois, 7-4.

Ball, who was 4-1 in the tournament, was named the Outstanding Pitcher. She struck out 28 in 29 2/3 innings. Teammate Estee Okumura, a former Punahou School standout, was named MVP. Okumura led the tournament in batting (.688), hits (11), runs (8) and total bases (22), and tied for the lead in doubles (3), home runs (2) and triples (1).

Hawaii placed six on the all-tournament team. They are: infielders Natalie Gonzales and Stacey Porter; outfielders Stacie Hirano and Tyree Woodruff; pitcher Desiree Duran and designated player Trisha Ramos. Also named to the team are: catcher Shannon Goebel (Western Illinois), infielders Kim Bisset (Loyola Marymount) and Bridget Maxwell (Western Illinois), and outfielder Anna Trauernicht (Loyola Marymount).

HPU pulls rank: Holly Garcia hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday to complete Hawaii Pacific’s sweep of nationally ranked Armstrong Atlantic at HPU’s windward campus field.

Garcia’s homer gave HPU a 5-3 victory. Earlier, the Sea Warriors handed the NCAA’s fourth-ranked Division II team a 6-3 loss.

HPU improved to 19-1; Armstrong Atlantic is 7-3.

Garcia batted 3-for-4 and Ashelle Acosta went 2-for-3 in support of Malia Sullivan (8-1), who spaced eight hits in pitching the distance.

In the opener, Jessica Parra (10-0) scattered nine hits and HPU scored four runs in the first inning without a base hit. Losing pitcher Annie Sells walked four and hit two batters in the first inning.

UHH sweeps: Kristine Kahoalii and Chenelle Chikazawa pitched complete games yesterday as Hawaii-Hilo swept a doubleheader from Wisconsin-Parkside, 2-1 and 4-2, at the UHH field.

Kahoalii allowed three hits and courtesy runner Kalei Robia scored the winning run on an error with one out in the 10th inning. Kahoalii (5-3) struck out three and walked two.

Chikazawa (2-1) permitted five hits while striking out three and walking three. Kayla Kahuli hit a two-run double to put Hilo ahead 3-1 in the fourth.
