Plane accident kills five in Kuwait
A U.S. Navy plane accidentally dropped some form of munitions on a bombing range in Kuwait today, killing five people, including four Americans, Pentagon officials said.

Mercury contamination affects dozens in Halawa
People fascinated by the dry touch of a silver-colored liquid brought to a Halawa public housing complex Saturday had no idea they were playing with mercury. But the metallic element today sent 36 to 50 people, mostly school children, to hospitals for treatment of mercury exposure, according to police. It also will cause closure of Aiea Elementary School tomorrow.

UH names Dobelle as president
The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents today named Evan Dobelle, president of Trinity College in Connecticut, president of the 10-campus Hawai'i system. He will be paid $442,000 annually in a contract that runs to June 30, 2008.

Woman murdered in Kahala; suspect turns self in
Police today are searching for a man who stabbed a woman to death shortly before 4:45 a.m. at a Kahala townhouse. The man is believed to be the woman's ex-boyfriend.

Police completes Ala Moana Center shooting probe
The Honolulu Police Department’s Internal Affairs division has completed its criminal investigation of a Jan. 13 police shooting at Ala Moana Center in which a murder suspect was killed. Prosecutors will next determine whether the shooting was justified.
