Advertiser staff

Wade Taguchi hit a grand slam and drove in a school-record seven runs as Hawaii Pacific University trounced Teikyo-Post (Conn.), 16-3, in the nightcap of a baseball doubleheader last night at Hans L’Orange Park.

Taguchi also hit an RBI double as HPU won the first game, 8-2.

HPU improved to 10-10; Teikyo-Post was making its season debut.

Taguchi had three hits in the second game, including his grand slam in the first inning, an RBI single in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth.

Jeremiah Yacap batted 1-for-3 in the opener and 2-for-3 in the nightcap to extend his hitting streak to a school-record-tying 18 games.

Bryce Uegawachi, Daric Stith and Lucas Castlen each had two hits in support of winning pitcher Kelton Otsuka in the second game. Otsuka (3-0) yielded five hits in seven innings and struck out eight.

Corey Hansen and Ikaika DuPont each had two hits for HPU in the first game.

Teikyo-Post’s Josh Payne batted 6-for-6 with three RBIs in the doubleheader.

SOFTBALL

BYUH drops two: Brigham Young University-Hawaii was held to three hits in dropping a doubleheader to nationally ranked Armstrong Atlantic yesterday in Laie.

Julie King pitched a two-hitter in a 6-0 victory in the first game, then Annie Sells allowed one hit as the visitors from Savannah, Ga., completed the sweep with a 9-0 victory in a game shortened to five innings by the eight-run, mercy rule.

Armstrong Atlantic, ranked No. 4 in Division II, improved to 9-3 on the season. BYUH fell to 6-16.

Seasider pitcher Lyndi Frei held the visitors scoreless through four innings of the first game before four errors helped Armstrong Atlantic score four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Frei gave up seven hits and five unearned runs while striking out five and walking two. King did not strike out a batter and walked one.

Tesh Wievel drove in three runs in the second game to lead Armstrong Atlantic.

Maggie Reynolds had two of BYUH’s three hits on the day, including a single that broke up Sells’ no-hit bid.

UH-Hilo rained out: The scheduled doubleheader between Hawaii-Hilo and visiting Wisconsin-Parkside was canceled due to rain yesterday and will not be rescheduled.

UH-Hilo plays host to St. Xavier (Ill.) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader today while Wisconsin-Parkside travels to Oahu for later games.
