Advertiser Staff

Jessica Parra and Malia Sullivan pitched complete games as Hawai'i Pacific University swept a doubleheader from Lipscomb (Tenn.) University, 8-0 and 4-1, yesterday at HPU’s windward campus field.

The sweep improved HPU’s record to 21-1. Lipscomb fell to 8-11.

Parra (11-0) pitched a two-hitter, striking out two and walking three in a game shortened to six innings by the eight-run mercy rule.

Ashelle Acosta and Milonne Chapman had two hits apiece and Samee Fernandez and Brandy Choy Foo had two RBIs each for HPU.

Sullivan (9-1) allowed seven hits, struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Holly Garcia had two RBIs.

MORE SOFTBALL

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team withstood a late rally to defeat St. Xavier of Illinois, 5-3, in the first game then made a comeback of its own in the second game to pull out a 4-3 victory yesterday at the UHH softball field.

The sweep improved the Vulcans’ record to 10-6. St. Xavier was making its season debut. The teams play another doubleheader today starting at 2 p.m.

Kristine Kahoalii (6-3) pitched a complete-game five-hitter in the opener and survived a seventh-inning rally. St. Xavier loaded the bases with no outs and scored two runs before Kahoalii worked out of trouble.

Trisha Holley had three hits and Leinani Hashida had two hits and two RBIs for Hilo.

Hashida led off the seventh inning of the second game with a home run over the right-field fence to win it. She and Rachel Loo each had two hits.

Taysha Anderson (2-2) pitched a complete-game six-hitter, striking out four and walking one.
