Wahine runner qualifies for NCAAs

Cheryl Smith, University of Hawai'i distance runner, has qualified for the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000-meter run.
Smith became a provisional qualifier on April 20 when she posted a Western Athletic Conference season best with a time of 34 minutes, 25.35 seconds at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif.
Smith, a junior, is a transfer from State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland.
The NCAA Championships will be held May 30-June 2 in Eugene, Ore. Smith will compete on May 31.
CANOES
Smooth sailing: The sailing canoe Tui Tonga won two races last weekend in the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association's Aston Race Series.
On Saturday, Tui Tonga won the Kahakuloa Challenge off Maui, traveling from Kahului to Fleming Beach in 1 hour, 45 minutes. Kamakakoa came in second at 1:50, followed by Laamaomao at 1:58.
On Sunday, Tui Tonga won the Aston Moloka'i North Shore Challenge, going from Fleming Beach to Kaluako'i, Moloka'i, in 5 hours, 23 minutes. Kahiau was second at 5:30, followed by Laamaomao at 5:38.
Mark Brewer was the winning captain for both races. His crew consisted of Steve Baker, Amy Young, Theresa Felgate, Keokoa Cummings and Dave Johnson.
The next race in the series is scheduled for June 23, and will travel from Kaluako'i, Moloka'i, to Kailua Beach on O'ahu.
LIFEGUARDS
Junior program: Registration for the City and County of Honolulu's Leeward Coast Junior Lifeguard Program will be held tomorrow at the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.
The program is open to boys and girls ages 13-17, with strong swimming skills. Certified City and County lifeguards provide instruction, including ocean safety concepts, first aid and surf rescue techniques.
Participants can register for any of the seven different one-week courses that begin June 18. Courses will be held at Poka'i Bay and Makaha Beach.
There is no entry fee, although a $25 donation is suggested. For information, call Mark Cunningham at 589-2251.
CORRECTION
Boxing card: Tuesday's Hawai'i Professional Boxing Inc. show at Aloha Tower will feature six bouts scheduled for four rounds each. An incorrect number of bouts was listed in a story posted yesterday.
