It's time to mulch the Christmas tree

 •  Where to recycle

Seems like only yesterday that there was a mad rush on Christmas trees.

Well, the 12th day of Christmas is already upon us and it's time to take down that festive Yuletide centerpiece — unless, of course, you've become addicted to sweeping up needles.

So to ease the heartbreak of bidding adieu to your sparkling pyramid of indoor greenery, why not do something for the environment? We're not talking trash here, we're talking recycling. It just so happens that TreeCycling centers open today around the state.

Why recycle? Because it takes the strain off our limited landfills and produces chip mulch and compost that helps keep Hawai'i green and lush. Mulch is healthy because it holds in moisture, controls weeds and reduces soil erosion.

On O'ahu, TreeCycling centers are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 521-2447 for more information, or go to Honolulu's County's Recycling and Waste Disposal Web site at www.opala.org.

If you can't get to a TreeCycling center this weekend, you can leave your tree out for pickup by the twice-a-month city curbside green-waste recycling service. Trees that are flocked, draped with tinsel and other decorations and paraphernalia won't be accepted for recycling.

O'ahu TreeCycling centers are located at Kailua Intermediate School, Kaiser High School, Kapalama Elementary School, Kapi'olani Community College, Kapolei Elementary School, Maka'unulau (16 Acres) Park (Mililani), Polynesian Cultural Center, Richardson Law School at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, Wai'anae Comprehensive Health Center, Waiau District Park and Waimea Falls Park.
