Rain persists over O'ahu, Kaua'i

Heavy showers created minor flooding on Kaua'i late yesterday and lighter showers on O'ahu held the potential for becoming heavy.
The National Weather Service issued flash-flood and severe thunderstorm watches for both islands yesterday. The watches were in effect until 4 a.m. today and could be extended.
The rainy weather should clear off at least briefly late tomorrow or early Wednesday, said Hans Rosendal, a forecaster in Honolulu. But Hawai'i's clear skies and trade wind days, normal for about 85 percent of the summer, seem to be holding back this year.
"It is unusual," Rosendal said, "to have this almost wintertime system affecting our weather."
The troublesome circulation pattern is evident across the Pacific, he said, and shows no signs of clearing out soon. But it is bound to break sometime.
"The calendar is on our side," Rosendal said.
