Thousands of surfers hit the water yesterday, like these body boarders at the Kapahulu groin, on the promise of a big south swell. Many left disappointed because the surf was smaller then expected. Wave heights should hold near the same level today.

City and County life guards were kept busy yesterday as waves on the south shore reached heights of nearly 12 feet, face value.

Dispatcher Rod Alderton said three people were rescued at Sandy Beach, one at Kuhio Beach, seven from the water near Portlock. He said 23 people were assisted out of the water off Waikiki.

Life guards also helped firefighters rescue kayakers having difficulty in Niu Valley.

None of those rescued was seriously injured, Alderton said.

"The surf will probably continue (today), but as far as Mother's Day, it was all good news," he said.
