FRANCIS S. TAKEMOTO, who went from teaching mathematics to serving with the heroes of the 100th Infantry Battalion in World War II and on to become the first American of Japanese ancestry to achieve the rank of general, died Sunday in Honolulu at the age of 89. See story.

The Lyman House Museum will close Saturday to allow staff and volunteers to attend the funeral of HAROLD LUSCOMB JR., a familiar figure in downtown Hilo who loved sharing the area's history with residents and visitors alike. Luscomb died May 23 on O'ahu following heart surgery. He was 76. See story.

J. WILLIAM "BILL" COOK, 89, of Washington, D.C., died May 15, 2002. A retired chemist for the Food and Drug Administration. Born in Erie, Colo. He kept a winter residence in Honolulu and donated his large collection of Hawaiian and Pacific Island music to the University of Hawai'i. Survived by children, Russell Cook, Susan Pifer, Charlotte LaRoy and Janice Arai; three stepchildren; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. No local service.

VIOLET TAM DOVE, 95, of Niu Valley, died May 25, 2002. Born in Makawao, Maui.
