JIM BARTELS, who helped preserve 'Iolani Palace and Washington Place for future generations, was remembered yesterday by friends and colleagues as a gentle-but-powerful guiding force in the Hawaiian community. He died of complications from cancer Sunday in California. He was 57. See story.

JAMES "JIMMY" SUEYOSHI, a high-school dropout who became one of the top chefs in Hawai'i despite never taking a formal cooking class, died April 11. He was 75. See story.
