Hotel occupancy near 90 percent

 •  How Hawai'i hotels are faring

Hotels in Hawai'i were nearly 90 percent full last week, reaching the highest average occupancy level since Hospitality Advisors LLC began tracking the numbers in September 2001.

It was the second week in a row that state hotel occupancy hit a record high since the survey began.

All islands posted strong performances for the week, with Maui, Kaua'i and the Big Island all reaching above 91 percent in occupancy rates. O'ahu had a slightly lower average of 88.4 percent, but also showed a respectable recovery.

"It's just refreshing to see," said Joseph Toy, president of Hospitality Advisors LLC, after the release of the results yesterday.

"The last two weeks have been very, very busy across the board," Toy said.

With the tourism industry soon heading into the softer off-peak season, "this gives us a little more momentum that hopefully carries over."
