ANIMAL COMPANIONS
Make sure your pet is safe, happy while you're away

Anytime you leave home, your animals require extra consideration. Cleo here will be fine at home with a responsible pet-sitter.

If the holidays mean traveling away from home, now is the time to make arrangements for your animal companions who must stay put.

You may wish to hire a pet-sitter who will care for your animal in your home, or you may choose a kennel to board your pets. The Hawaiian Humane Society does not offer boarding service, but offers these tips to help you make the right decision to keep your pets happy while you are away.

It may be tempting to ask a neighbor to look in on your pet while you're gone, and if that's just a day or so, it might be an option.

For two or more days away, your pet might be better off in the care of a true pet-sitter, a qualified, experienced individual who is paid to care for your pet.

You will have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your pet is being cared for by a professional, someone who may also water the plants and bring in the mail. Since the pet-sitter has access to your home, you'll be trusting him or her with all your belongings.

Memorialize your pets

"A Celebration of Pets" acknowledges the unique relationship we have with our companion animals. Please join us as we recognize the pets that have filled our lives with love.

You can memorialize a pet from your past or honor a pet that is sharing your life today. Everyone is welcome. You may wish to bring a photo (maximum 3 inches) of your pet. Ornaments can be personalized with a photo or name for a $5 donation. The celebration tree will be lit every day during the holiday season.

Your pet will enjoy being left in the care of a person who will spend quality time, and provide exercise and the proper food, and who knows what to do should your pet need veterinary attention.

Pets who are left at home in their familiar surroundings usually feel more comfortable about your absence — especially if there are multiple pets who live together.

To find a good pet-sitter, get recommendations from your veterinarian, a dog trainer or friend. Interview candidates at your home and watch how they interact with your animal. If your pet needs medication, make sure the pet-sitter is comfortable administering it. Ask how much time they intend to spend with your pet. Get references — and call them.

A boarding kennel can offer quality care and might be better for pets who need medical supervision or tend to escape. Ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.

Visit the facility in advance and ask all the same questions you would of a pet-sitter, including questions on how much exercise and cuddling time your pet would receive.

Whether you choose a boarding kennel or hire a pet-sitter for your home, make the arrangements as soon as possible. Leave clear written instructions regarding your travel plans and your animal's care. Then trust your caregivers and enjoy your holiday, knowing that your pet is being well cared-for in your absence.
