Weightlifter Bryce Yamauchi, who turned 19 last Friday, has had a good couple months.

On March 12, the 2003 Punahou School graduate earned a silver medal in the 123-pound division at the Senior National Weightlifting Championships in Merriville, Ind.

On Feb. 13, he became the Junior National Champion by winning his weight class in the meet for those 20 years old and younger in Itasca, Ill. He earned a spot on the Junior World team that will compete in the Junior World Championships in Belarus in May.

In the Olympic-style weightlifting competition in Itasca, the 5-foot-3 Yamauchi snatched 92.5 kilograms (203 pounds) and clean and jerked 115 (253 pounds). At the senior nationals, he snatched 95 kg (209 pounds) and 115.

At the senior event, Yamauchi was beaten by Shelton Gilyard of Florida.

"He's a multi-national champion. He's been around a while. I wanted to knock him off, but it didn't happen," he said.

Yamauchi said he "started (lifting) when I was 10, but got more serious when I was 14. My dad started taking me to national meets and that sparked my interest.

"I played soccer when I was younger, but gave that up for lifting."

Bryce's father is John Yamauchi, a three-time national champion.
