Bigger is better for Kahuku in OIA win

 •  Baseball:
Kailua rolls past McKinley to improve to 5-0

McKinley's Meagan Miyasaka dribbles away from Kahuku's Tina Soliai. Kahuku won, 70-50.

Kahuku utilized its superior size against a quick McKinley team, coming away with a 70-50 win in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division girls basketball game last night at McKinley Gym.

"I think (size) was a factor, but it was our size versus their quickness, so I think we're even," Kahuku coach Wendy Anae said.

Kahuku, which is the only undefeated team in the OIA East, improved to 5-0, and McKinley dropped to 3-2.

The Red Raiders opened the game with a 10-0 run, but the Tigers closed to 10-8 on two 3-pointers by senior guard Bre Carson and a basket by freshman Chelsie Sato.

The Tigers took their only lead of the game, 11-10, on a 3-pointer by senior guard Melody Ababa, 20 seconds into the second quarter.

McKinley tied the game at 18 with just under four minutes to go in the first half, but led by senior center Latoya Wily, who scored 10 points in the second quarter, Kahuku went on a 14-9 run for a 32-27 halftime lead.

Wily, who is 6 feet, had almost free reign under the basket. The tallest player on the court for McKinley at any time was around 5-8. Wily finished with 26 points.

"It think (size) was a big factor, but you still gotta work harder, because you never know what the little girls can do, because they have to work that much harder," Wily said.

McKinley, which made seven 3-pointers in the first half, did not make another until two minutes remaining in the game.

"McKinley has a bunch of shooters, so we had to adjust to that," Wily said.

Kahuku, meanwhile, made its only 3-pointers of the game in the third quarter as the Red Raiders outscored the Tigers, 20-7.

Anae said rebounding was the key for Kahuku, and that McKinley was smaller, "but they are aggressive on the boards."

She said once the Red Raiders began to pick up its rebounding, they began to take control of the game. They continued to wear down the Tigers, and with their size, disrupted the Tigers' shots.

"It was a physical game and we're not a physical team," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said. "We knew it was coming."
