All golfers play from the same tees so a player from any flight is eligible to win the overall title. Last year, seniors Michael Foster and Merv Matsumoto tied for second at 216. Kop was the only golfer in red numbers, at 4-under-par 210.

Others in the field this weekend include former champions Sean Doi (1998), Clayton Gomi (2000) and Todd Rego (2001), Manoa Cup champion Ryan Perez, Matt Ma, Del-Marc Fujita, Jarett Hamamoto and Randy Shibuya.

Championship, Senior and C Flights play at Leilehua tomorrow and Kalakaua Saturday, with the A and B Flights on the opposite rotation. The field is cut to approximately 120 players after the second round, with all golf at Leilehua Sunday. Tee times are from 7 a.m. each day.

Duke student takes Big Island Amateur

Duke University's Skip Murphy won the 81st Big Island Amateur on Sunday at Waikoloa Beach Resort's Kings' Course.

Murphy, who does not play on the Blue Devils' golf team, shot the final day's low score — an 8-over-par 80 in constant 30-mph winds. Murphy's parents live at Mauna Lani. He is working at Kuki'o Beach & Golf Club in Kailua, Kona this summer.

Murphy overcame first-round leader Dylan Nakano, of Hilo, who took a two-shot advantage into the final round.

Murphy finished at 11-over 155, with Nakano (72-84) a shot back. Charles Park (78-80) and Jeff Strang (76-82) tied for third.
