After years of spearfishing, Sam Poomaihealani, left, at last went fishing with a pole and came away with a 345-pound halibut. At the urging of friend Tom Teruya of Honolulu, Poomaihealani, who splits his time between Hawai'i and Minnesota, accompanied Teruya to Kodiak Island, Alaska, where they went fishing with lodge owner Brad Aga, right. "I said, 'Sam, let's go fishing, you've never been up there,' " Teruya says. After Poomaihealani reeled in the 84-inch halibut, he figured his trip was a success. "He said we can't go next year," Teruya says. "I said why not? He said how are you going to top this?"
