Honolulu's top two mayoral candidates spent a record-smashing $6.2 million on their campaigns, according to reports filed with the state yesterday.

Defeated candidate Duke Bainum spent nearly twice as much as winner Mufi Hannemann: $4,026,467 vs. $2,200,835, the reports show.

The candidates spent a combined total of more than $800,000 in the final two weeks before the election, with Bainum outspending Hannemann by $137,000 during that period.

Bainum lent his campaign committee more than $2.7 million during the race, while Hannemann lent his camp $310,000.

Bainum raised $1.3 million from contributors, while Hannemann raised $1.9 million.

"I continue to be eternally grateful to everyone who contributed financially to my efforts," Hannemann said. "I've always said I'm not a wealthy man, nor do I come from a family that has a lot of wealth, and I didn't have that kind of advantage that my opponent had. So whatever was spent, we made sure that every dollar went to something that was worthwhile, meaningful and beneficial."

Bainum could not be reached for comment.

The three top candidates in the 2000 mayor's race spent less than $4 million.

Mayor Jeremy Harris spent $2,536,891; Hannemann spent $1,191,120; and Frank Fasi spent $212,754.

Harris won in the primary election, so the campaign period was nearly two months shorter than in the 2004 mayor's race.
