Mayor-elect Mufi Hannemann announced details of his inauguration plan yesterday, and said nearly 600 people have applied for jobs in his cabinet.

Hannemann said he will be officially sworn into office at Kapolei Hale in a private ceremony on Jan. 2, and that there will be a public ceremony at Honolulu Hale on Jan. 5.

He said the plan reflects his commitment to work out of Kapolei part of the time, but is also being driven by the fact that the Honolulu City Lights display will still be in place at City Hall on Jan. 2.

He said five committees on his transition team will immediately begin evaluating job applications, and that he hopes to begin announcing members of his cabinet within weeks.

Former mayor Frank Fasi and his wife Joyce will serve as honorary chairs of the inaugural celebration, Hannemann said. Inaugural events will include:

  • Private swearing-in ceremony, on Sunday, Jan. 2, noon, Kapolei Hale. The ceremony will be followed by a public 'ohana and keiki celebration on the Kapolei Hale grounds.
  • Prayer service, on Jan. 3, 7 a.m., Kawaiaha'o Church.
  • Public swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 5, 1 p.m., Honolulu Hale.
  • Inaugural gala on Jan. 5, 5:30 p.m., Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Prices range from $200 for individual tickets to $10,000 for special tables. Total of 1,700 tickets available. For information or tickets, call Cha Thompson at 864-5454, or Dean Okimoto at 479-1797.
