'Aiea senior co-captain Jodie Toyama knows how it feels to lose in the state semifinals — losing there twice in the previous two years.

She'll get her final chance to change that tonight as 'Aiea takes on defending state champion Punahou in the semifinals of the Ohana Hotels & Resorts Girls Soccer Championships.

'Aiea upset fourth-seeded Hawai'i Prep, 2-1, yesterday in a quarterfinal game at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. It plays Punahou, 3-0 winners over Kailua, tonight at 8.

In another upset, Pearl City defeated No. 3 Baldwin, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, 4-1. The Chargers play No. 2 Mililani, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, today at 6 p.m. in the other semifinal game. The Trojans blanked Kalaheo, 4-0.

"The team knows how it feels to lose in the semifinals, so it is motivation for us this year," Toyama said.

Toyama and junior Tobi Kanehira scored for 'Aiea (14-1), the OIA Western Division regular-season champion, in the win over HPA (15-3), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ.

Toyama scored in the 15th minute off an assist from Kanehira, who passed a ball down the left side of the field, giving Toyama a wide-open shot about 20-yards away from the goal. Toyama finished the play on a left-footed shot that entered the upper right corner of the goal for her second score of the tournament.

"She always hooks me up," Toyama said of Kanehira.

"It took some pressure off us and we could play more freely," 'Aiea coach Gordon Matsuoka said. "If we lost to Kailua (1-0 in the OIA semifinals), we can't take anyone lightly."

Kanehira scored the second goal in the 67th minute off an assist from sophomore Ambree Ako to give Na Ali'i the 2-0 lead.

Ako set up Kanehira on a through ball that split two defenders, leaving Kanehira with an open field. Kanehira juked the Hawai'i Prep goalkeeper and shot the ball into the open net.

"It went straight through two defenders and behind the sweeper," said Kanehira, a transfer from Roosevelt.

" 'Aiea is one of the best two teams in the OIA," HPA coach Stephen Perry said. "We made a couple of mistakes and they capitalized."

Hawai'i Prep came within one when Ann Songphatanayothin scored on a set play in the 72nd minute.

"We knew if we had the opportunity, it would have been the perfect play," said Perry, who said that they introduced that set play in practice two days ago.

The play started on an indirect kick just outside the right side of the penalty box, when four Ka Makani players lined up for the kick. The first two ran over the ball and senior Jennelle Pollette passed a ball down to sophomore Megan Pautler, the first runner, near the right post. Pautler crossed the ball to Songphatanayothin, who was running to the back post.

"The pass was really good, passing through all the girls," Songphatanayothin said. "The defense was giving me a lot of space. They thought the last person was going to kick it."

Punahou 3, Kailua 0: Ashley Collins and Elizabeth Carlson scored, and the Surfriders (10-3-2) had an own goal as the Buffanblu (11-0) advanced.

Collins' goal came in the 26th minute when she beat a defender and drove down the left side, beating the goalkeeper on the inside of the post.

Carlson's goal was on a 17-yard shot into the right side of the goal that the Kailua goalkeeper had a hard time controlling in the 58th minute.

Kailua's own goal was in the 53rd minute.

Mililani 4, KalAheo 0: Sarah Yoro scored a goal and had an assist to lead the Trojans (12-2-1) over the Mustangs (11-5).

Yoro's assist came on the first goal of the game by Raimee Ortega in the 32nd minute, when she split two defenders and Ortega beat the Kalaheo goalkeeper on a low shot.

Mililani received some breathing room when Kalaheo scored an own goal in the 46th minute. Senior Nicole Harris scored on a direct kick for the third goal and Yoro's goal came in the 70th minute on a low shot to the right corner.

Pearl City 4, Baldwin 1: Chelsea Arakawa, Chimene Sienkiewicz, Carisa Calpo and Kari Tanimoto all scored to lead the Chargers (11-3-1) past No. 3-seeded Bears (10-2-3).

Arakawa scored in the 22nd minute off an assist from Lauren Maeshiro, beat a defender and slotted a pass to Arakawa. Maeshiro also assisted Sienkiewicz's goal 23 seconds into the second half when she crossed a ball from the left side of the field which was contested by Blessing Drumeller, causing the Baldwin goalkeeper to come out. It left Sienkiewicz an open goal to score on.

Calpo scored in the 51st minute and Tanimoto in the 64th minute — both on rocket shots from just outside the 18-yard box.

Baldwin's Nga Nguyen scored in the 78th minute off a through pass from Kami Kapaku.

Consolation Round

Kaua'i 3, King Kekaulike 0: Holly Iloreta scored twice (12th and 70th minutes), and Madison Perry (4) added one for the Red Raiders (8-1-1), the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champs, as they blanked King Kekaulike (8-3-5) of the Maui Interscholastic League.

Waiakea 2, Hilo 1: Keyawna Meeks (2) and Elizabeth Brauher (54) scored to lift the Warriors (14-3) past the Vikings, their Big Island Interscholastic Federation rivals.

Lori Walker (1) scored for Hilo (12-5).

ILH BOYS

Pac-Five 1, Iolani 1: The Wolfpack and Raiders played to tie, forcing a one-game playoff for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's second state berth.

Pac-Five will play Kamehameha at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Saint Louis' field with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
