Abel Werner scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half and McKinley seized control with a 18-point third quarter to eliminate host Pearl City, 54, 38, in the first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association basketball tournament last night.
In other first-round games, Radford outplayed Kahuku and Moanalua routed Kapolei. The Kaimuki-Nanakuli game ended after this edition's deadline.
In today's quarterfinals at Mililani, McKinley will play Castle and Mililani will challenge Radford. In the other quarterfinals today at Kalaheo, Leilehua will play the winner of the Kaimuki-Nanakuli game and Kalaheo will host Moanalua.
Last night, McKinley led 21-20 at halftime and started the third quarter with a 12-4 run for a 33-24 lead. Tigers' center Iakopo Taumua and Werner combined for eight points during the surge. Taumua and Shane Quisano each finished with 12 points.
"I just told the kids at halftime, they have to step up the defense," McKinley coach Bob Morikuni said. "We were giving them too many easy baskets underneath by not covering the baseline."
McKinley's relentless defense allowed just nine baskets in the second half, including three in the fourth quarter, and forced the Chargers to hurry their offense.
"Our guys thought they had to come down and shoot the 3," Pearl City coach Lionel Villarmia said. "We told them, 'We just got to score, we don't need the 3, we can go inside on them, but they choose the 3.' "
Michael Hardy's putback got Pearl City to within 33-28 in the third quarter, but that's as close the Chargers would get for the rest of the game. Hardy finished with team-high 15 points.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers iced the game by making 11 free throws, including eight by Werner.
"I told my team to just believe," Werner said. "Believe in what coach Bob is teaching. We wanted this one real bad. Pearl City beat us in preseason on a game-winning shot by (Hardy). We knew we were in for a rough game. We just knocked down the shots and hit free-throws at the end."
Pearl City led for most of the first half, but Werner rallied the Tigers hitting two baskets in the closing minutes to turn a 18-16 deficit into a 21-20 halftime lead.
