Punahou's Rachael Lau, left, and Mililani's Alexis Choi go head-to-head in the state championship match.

Mililani's Shaunna Miyashiro, left, and Punahou's Allison Tsuchida fight for position as the ball bounces out of bounds.

Punahou goalkeeper Allison Lipsher makes the clinching save during the penalty-kick phase against Mililani.
Before the game, Punahou senior goalkeeper Allison Lipsher kept herself calm by "thinking about the tune I used to fall asleep to."

It showed, when she calmly took her place in the goal and made three saves in penalty kicks as defending champion Punahou defeated Mililani, 1-0, in the final of the Ohana Hotels & Resorts Girls Soccer Championships at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium last night.

A crowd of 1,680 saw Punahou outscore Mililani, 2-1, during the penalty-kick phase in a rematch of last year's championship game won by Punahou 1-0.

Last night, neither team could score through two 40-minute halves and two 10-minute overtime periods.

Sophomore Elizabeth Carlson and junior Ashley Collins made their penalty-kick shots for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Buffanblu (13-0).

"When I went up I kinda just thought to myself not to pressure out, because that's what makes you choke," Collins said.

Mililani senior Ashley Nakamoto made one save in the penalty-kick phase for the Trojans (13-3-1), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champions, but could not match Lipsher's effort.

"I practiced with her before and she's awesome. I wish I could be as tall as her, but that never happened," said Nakamoto, who, at 5 feet 2, is seven inches shorter than Lipsher.

Punahou outscored its opponents 45-0 this season in a defensive effort Buffanblu coach Jorge Barbosa called "an accomplishment."

"We knew what we needed to do, but we just couldn't finish," Barbosa said after his team failed to score for the first time this season. "As well of a plan as we had, whatever plan their coach had, it obviously worked."

Both teams had their chances to score — most coming in the second half.

Five minutes after intermission Mililani senior midfielder Alexis Choi had a high, arching, 25-yard shot — the first legitimate chance by the Trojans — but Lipsher made the save.

The next minute, a cross by Mililani junior Sarah Yoro from the left side crossed through the 6-yard box but two Trojan attackers could not finish the play.

Punahou also came close, when in the 48th minute, Carlson collected a ball miscleared by the Trojan defense, took it to just inside the 18-yard box, but shot it high.

And, in the 55th minute, a shot by Punahou senior Allison Tsuchida was bobbled by Nakamoto but cleared out by the Mililani defense.

Mililani saw another close call stopped by Lipsher when she made a diving save on a one-on-one attempt by Ashley Albertazzi in the 73rd minute.

Lipsher, who suffered a charley horse in her right leg from the collision, said, "I knew I had to get up."

Much of the first half was played in Mililani's defensive half of the field, but there were no real shot opportunities by Punahou until about five minutes to go, when the Buffanblu began putting a lot of pressure — several shots just missing wide right or left.

The Trojans almost scored an own goal with about three minutes remaining in the half. Nakamoto saved it when she tipped out a miskick by a Mililani defender, who had attempted to clear the ball over the end line only to shoot the ball toward the upper left corner of the goal.

"That would have been the worst way to lose," Nakamoto said. "That was scary."

Mililani coach Ray Akiona said he was happy that the Trojans, playing in their fourth straight state championship game, forced the game into penalty kicks after beating Pearl City, 2-1, in penalty kicks in Friday's semifinal.

"It could have gone either way in the shootout, but Punahou did a good job," Akiona said.

"Ashley's been pretty on her game, and I can expect it from (Lipsher) — a goalkeeper of her caliber you expect it," he added. "It comes down to who could make the special shot and it was them."
