ROUND UP
Kaiser's Assily to play UH football

 •  Soccer: Punahou girls beat Mililani, 1-0
 •  Softball: Kapolei wins softball crown
 •  Softball: University High rolls to first D-II title

Chris Assily, who played safety at Kaiser High last season, has accepted a football scholarship from the University of Hawai'i.

Assily was recruited as a "gray shirt," meaning he will begin receiving his scholarship in January 2005.

But unlike other gray shirts, who delay enrolling until the semester they receive their scholarships, Assily said he will begin taking classes this coming fall semester.

Assily wants to start early because he is expected to move to linebacker at UH. Assily, who is 6 feet 1 and 200 pounds, was Kaiser's starting strong safety. He also competes in basketball and track.

Assily ran 100 meters in 10.9 seconds and 40 yards in 4.45 seconds. He can bench press 295 pounds.

Assily went on a recruiting visit to UH three weeks ago.

"It went well," he said. "I liked the program and the coaching staff. I liked the facilities."

He said he chose UH because "I wanted to stay home and play in front of the home crowd."

Last week, The Advertiser reported that Terry Wilson, a defensive back from Junipero Serra High in Gardena, Calif., and defensive lineman Paul Harmon of Skyline High in Oakland, had accepted football scholarships from the Warriors. Wilson and Harmon will gray shirt and enroll at UH in January 2005. After that, they will have five years to play four seasons.

In related news, defensive back George Perry, a 2003 Kahuku High graduate, has met the requirements to play for the Warriors in 2004. Perry signed with UH in February 2003 but did not earn a qualifying SAT score to enroll at UH last fall.
