Senior Jay Abrigo moved up from his defensive position to score for Mililani as it moved closer to defending its state title.

The three-time defending champions defeated Pearl City, 1-0, last night in a quarterfinal game of the Ohana Hotels & Resorts Boys Soccer Championships at Aloha Stadium.

Mililani (13-0), the three-time O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, plays Kamehameha tonight at 8 in one semifinal.

Pearl City (11-3) meets in Kealakehe in the consolation round.

"Coach Jeff (Yamamoto) encouraged me to step up more," Abrigo said. "He knew if we had the ball on one side, they would get sucked over."

Senior midfielder Brent Murakami sent a ball from the left side of the field into the penalty box, and Abrigo ran through an attempted clear by a Pearl City defender and made a low shot into the right corner of the goal in the 64th minute.

"We needed more power on top," said Murakami, who pointed out Abrigo's strength and size. "I saw him on his run so I just popped it up there."

Mililani co-head coach Steve McGehee said that the coaches moved Abrigo up to play forward when they saw that they needed more aggressive play on the forward line.

"We needed someone to power through the ball," he said. Two minutes later, they moved Abrigo back to defense to preserve the lead.

Abrigo also had two chances earlier in the game when he moved up from his defensive position, one in the first half and one in the second.

"He started making penetrating runs, and he comes up unmarked," Pearl City coach Scott Keopuhiwa said. "We tried to adjust to that, but he muscled his way and created opportunities."

In the closing moments of the game, Pearl City had a direct kick from about 25 yards, but it was blocked by the Trojans' wall and resulted in a corner kick for the Chargers.

On the corner kick, Trojan goalkeeper Darren Smith reached out and snatched the ball out of midair to seal the win.

The teams played to a scoreless first half, not surprising considering their rich rivalry.

Between the two, they have won all the OIA soccer titles since 1999. Mililani beat Pearl City, 3-1, in the regular season.

"Pearl City is like playing against your brother," McGehee said. "No one is giving anything up."

High-pressure defense created chances for the Chargers, who broke up a lot of the Trojans' passes out of the defensive and middle-thirds of the field.

"Pearl City closed a lot of space, keeping our defense back so we couldn't get forward," McGehee said.

But Mililani, which used four defenders, was able to handle Pearl City's two forwards.

It was a similar situation for the Trojans, whose chances came mainly on long through balls from the midfielders.

In other quarterfinal action:

Iolani 1, Kaiser 0 (2 OTs): Senior Dyrk Teramae scored in the 98th minute to give Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Iolani (11-0-4) the double overtime victory over Kaiser (12-3-1) of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

Teramae scored on a through pass from senior Chris Faulkner. The ball got past a Kaiser defender, leaving Teramae one-on-one with the goalkeeper, whom he beat with a low shot.

The game was scoreless through two 40-minute halves and one 10-minute overtime period.

Baldwin 4, Kalaheo 3: Seniors Blake Nunes and Kimo Ballesteros scored two goals apiece for third-seeded Baldwin (11-0), the Maui Interscholastic League champion.

Nunes scored his first goal in the 36th minute when he collected a deflection from a clear, beat a defender, and made a low shot that sneaked under the Kalaheo goalkeeper. His second was in the 46th minute on a header from a direct kick by senior Cory Irwin.

Ballesteros scored his goals in the 21st and 52nd minutes, both on headers from crosses from senior Alejandro Garcia-Rosell.

Kalaheo senior Max Anton scored two goals and had an assist on senior Andrew Wary's goal.

Kamehameha 2, Kealakehe 1 (2 OTs): Logan Sauer scored in the 95th minute to give Kamehameha (12-2-3) of the ILH a double overtime win over fourth-seeded Kealakehe (13-3), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion.

Sauer scored when Bryscen Makana Prothero kicked a high ball that deflected off a defender, throwing off Waverider goalkeeper Dante Leuenberger, who was coming out to make a save.

The ball bounced over Leuenberger's head, leaving an open goal for Sauer.

Junior Michael DeCaires scored in the 46th minute for the Warriors.

Kealakehe's CJ Cintas scored on a penalty kick in the 16th minute.

Consolation Round

Kaua'i 1, Castle 0: Justin Toulon scored in the 49th minute for Kaua'i (6-4) of the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation as it defeated Castle (9-5-1) of the OIA.
