Mid-Pacific moved a step closer to clinching its first-ever Division I state high school boys basketball tournament berth last night.
Josh Mitchell scored 18 points as the visiting Owls edged Damien, 47-44, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu third-place tournament.
Mid-Pacific will play host Kamehameha tomorrow night at 7 at Kekuhaupi'o gym, with the winner earning the ILH's third berth in next week's state tournament at Blaisdell Arena. League champion Iolani and runner-up Punahou will also represent the ILH.
Damien had possession trailing 45-44 when it was whistled for a traveling violation. In frustration, a Monarch player slammed the ball to the court, and a technical foul was called.
Mid-Pacific's Kellen Hastie sank two free throws, and time expired shortly after Damien inbounded the ball.
Hastie and Chris Perry each added 11 points for the Owls.
Fehi Sevelo scored 14 points and Ranson DeCosta 10 for Damien, which was bidding for its first state tournament appearance since 1972.
ILH executive director Don "Spud" Botelho, who was MPI's athletic director from 1974-2002, said the Owls have never qualified for the state tournament under its current format.
Mid-Pacific did participate in the now-defunct A state tournament for small schools in 1976 and 1977.
