Honolulu's Stephanie Kono shot a 4-over 75, but remained tied for the lead after two rounds of the 2004 Westfield (Ohio) Junior PGA Championship, the PGA of America's national championships for boys and girls ages 17 and younger.
The 14-year-old Punahou student is at 3-over-par 145, tied with Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., and Angela Park of Torrance, Calif. Both shot 1-under-par 70. The 72-hole tournament ends tomorrow.
"I thought I played the front nine pretty well, except for that one mistake (bogey on the par-5 third hole)," Kono said. "The back nine, it started on No. 12. I hit a bad tee shot to the right and I made bogey and that started me off on a bad stretch. I actually thought I played better this round. I was hitting the ball pretty well on the front."
Wailuku's Kelly Nakashima shot a 79 and has a 159 total.
Miguel Cabrera-Bello of Spain shot to the lead after a record-setting 7-under 64 in the boys' division. His total is 2-under 140.
Hilo's Jacob Low shot 77152.
Bello's round broke the previous second-round record of 65 set by Robert Floyd in 1993 and Billy Andrade in 1981.
The 116 competitors for the Westfield Junior PGA Championship consists of the junior boys' and girls' division champions from each of The PGA of America's 41 sections, as well as special invitees.
