Randal Ono called it a "once in a lifetime deal." Instead of going out to make a catch, the catch came to him. Ono, of Lawa'i, Kaua'i, was at Salt Pond in Hanapepe at low tide. "A lot of rocks were exposed — eight inches above the water," Ono said. The Lihu'e Airport firefighter usually fishes for aweoweo, but in the corner of his eye he saw an ulua jump and get caught in the rocks. He quickly grabbed it and threw it on shore, not realizing until later that the sharp tail had cut his hand. It was all worthwhile, however, as he scaled the fish at "40 to 42 pounds."
