JOHN SPIERLING, former chairman of the Honolulu Liquor Commission and a former Navy officer who developed projects like the Kahala Hilton, and also served on many government boards and commissions, died Saturday in his sleep while on a business trip in San Francisco. He was 74. See story.

FRANCIS A McHALE JR., a well-known and innovative marine construction engineer and leader in alternative energy, died June 2 at his home in Honolulu. He was 70. See story.

TRINIDAD Q. ALCONCEL, former Philippine consul general in Honolulu who later served as the country's ambassador to Argentina, has died. He was 89. See story.

ZENON BATANGAN BARROGA, 81, of Kea'au, Hawai'i, died June 14, 2004. Born in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. A farmer. Survived by wife, Ceferina; sons, Jose, Rogelio and Flordelino; daughters, Josephine Gamilo, Marieta Barroga and Milagros Tagalicud; sister, Maria Agmata; 16 grandchildren; great-grandchild.
