The Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Classic will open tomorrow at Makaha Surfing Beach with a new twist.

The contest will run tomorrow, Sunday and March 13 and 14.

The event, in its 28th year, will add a new division this year, beachboy-style surfing, or standup paddle surfing. Contestants in the new division will be required to use boards at least 10 feet long and be standing up while padding with a long paddle.

"My intent in bringing back this older form of riding waves is to perpetuate our Hawaiian surfing heritage, much as we have done with longboarding, paipo boarding, tandem surfing and canoe surfing," said Richard Kalolo'okalani "Buffalo" Keaulana, the founder of the Classic.

More than 200 entries in the 14 events in the professional and amateur ranks are expected to participate.
