CAL KODAMA

Cal Kodama, 3, shows off his first fish, a hinalea he caught with his father fishing from the shore at Mokule'ia.

"He caught it," says mother, Cindy. "He did bring it in himself."

Father Alan was there to offer assistance. After realizing that Cal had hooked a fish, Alan turned the pole over to his son.

"That's his first fishing pole and that's his first fish," Alan says.

Cal's reaction was "shocked," Alan says, "very excited. He wanted to touch it."

Cal also wanted to keep the fish. However, after some discussion, and a bit of cajoling, they returned it to the ocean.

"I have a filter system," Alan says. "We kept it for maybe four hours and I kind of convinced him that he needs to let it go so it gets bigger.

"I think he understands if you let it go and they get to eat more, a chance to get bigger, then you get a chance to catch them again."

Prior to landing the hinalea, Cal's fishing experience was mainly limited to watching his father and grandfather.

"He plays with my tackle box and he plays with my reel," Alan says.
