For the first time in its 47-year history, a team from Maui captured the Lipton Cup, Hawai'i's historic sailing trophy.

In last weekend's two-day series, yacht Ho'okipa, of the Maui Boat and Yacht Club, out sailed three O'ahu yachts, including three-time defending champion Waikiki Yacht Club. The other contenders were Hawai'i Yacht Club and Kane'ohe Yacht Club.

The event is named after Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea merchant and shipping tycoon who presented the Lipton Cup to Hawai'i in 1930.

With the exception of the World War II years, when private vessels were not allowed out on the open water for racing, the Cup has been a much sought-after prize by the state's best racing yachts.

Each year the yacht clubs select their best racing boat and best crew, one boat per club. Although the annual competition is open to yacht clubs on all the islands, O'ahu clubs have dominated the races.

"The Maui Boat and Yacht Club is proud and pleased to have at last become a part of the Lipton Cup tradition," said Geoff Bourne, the club's commodore.
