Veterans Day events

Here is a partial list of some Veterans Day events on O'ahu:

10 a.m.: More than 40 marching units, including four bands, are expected to participate in the 59th Veterans Day Parade in Wahiawa. The parade, sponsored by the Wahiawa Lions, starts at Ka'ala Elementary School and proceeds up California Avenue to Fred Wright Park. The theme is "Supporting Our Troops," and will include a keynote address from Brig. Gen. Vern T. Miyagi, commander of the Hawai'i Army National Guard. Information: Harry Kwon, 621-6654.

10 a.m.: A ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific will feature a "massing of the colors," 21-gun salute, a "missing man" flyover by F-15s of the 199th Fighter Squadron, and a keynote address by retired Marine Gen. Hank Stackpole. Information: Celyn Chong Kee, 586-0255.

11 a.m.: A memorial service will be held at the Submarine Memorial Park and Naval Station Pearl Harbor. The keynote speaker will be Capt. George Manaskie, chief of staff, Submarine Force Pacific. There will be a 21-gun salute and traditional tolling of the bell for submarines lost in World War II. Information: U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs, 473-0911.

1 p.m.: The theme of the 2004 Governor's Veterans Day ceremony at the Hawai'i State Veterans Cemetery in Kane'ohe is "Honoring Hawai'i's Veterans: Past, Present and Future." Gov. Linda Lingle and Maj. Gen. Robert G.F. Lee will provide remarks. Four F/A-18 Hornets will perform a flyover at approximately 2 p.m. Information: Maj. Charles Anthony, 733-4258.

4:45 p.m.: The USS Missouri Memorial Association will hold a sunset ceremony aboard the "Mighty Mo." The ceremony will include a parade of colors, rifle salute and echo taps. William Paty Jr., a World War II veteran and civilian aide to the secretary of the Army at-large, is the keynote speaker. The event is free and is open to the public.
