UC-Irvine freshman Randall Tom, a 2004 graduate of Seabury Hall from Wailuku, Maui, was named the Big West Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Big West Shootout at the Anteater Aquatics Complex last week in his first collegiate meet.

RANDALL TOM

Tom had a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (20.94 seconds).

He finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.76, the third fastest time in UCI history.

He also was a member of the 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:32.45, the second fastest at UCI.

Women's Soccer

• Oregon freshman forward Kami Kapaku (Baldwin '04 of Wailuku, Maui) was tabbed the team's Offensive MVP at a year-end awards banquet as voted on by team members.

Kapaku led the squad in goals (four), points (nine), shots (37) and shots on goal (23), and ranked second in assists (one). She was the only freshman and one of two players to start all 19 games. On the Duck all-time season charts, she ended the year in a tie for 10th all-time in shots, while her goal total was only one shy of 10th place.

Oregon coach Bill Steffen has resigned his position effective immediately following nine seasons at the helm, according to Ducks athletic director Bill Moos.

Four players from Hawai'i are expected to be on the Oregon roster next season — Kapaku, forwards Mele French (Mililani '02) and Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku, Maui), and Mililani High senior Sarah Yoro, who verbally committed to Oregon.

• Western Washington senior forward Chela Gray (Iolani '00) was a unanimous selection to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference first team.

Gray, who was one of just four unanimous picks, led Western in goals (nine), points (20) and game-winning goals (four). A second-team league all-star in 2002, she finished her three-year career with 21 goals.

Men's Soccer

• Santa Clara sophomore forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula, Maui) scored the game-winning goal with one minute left to hand Loyola Marymount a 1-0 loss Saturday.

• Seattle senior Jordan Inouye (Kaiser) was selected to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

Inouye carries a 3.30 grade point average in E-Commerce and Info Systems.

• Duke freshman Tia Ferguson (Seabury Hall '04) earned all-Southeast honors after finishing in the top 25 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship.

Ferguson finished in 12th place in 20 minutes, 43 seconds in the 6K race, helping Duke to the regional title.

Ferguson will accompany the team to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 at Terre Haute, Ind.

• U.S. Naval Academy sophomore Julie Jordan (Punahou '02 of Kane'ohe) finished 81st out of 162 runners in 23:28 in the 6K NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Penn State Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, Pa.

• UC Santa Barbara senior forward Brandy Richardson (Kalaheo '01 of 'Aiea) grabbed 13 boards in a 63-56 loss to Love and Basketball in an exhibition game Saturday.

• Eastern Kentucky sophomore center Fatai Hala'api'api (Lahainaluna '02) led the team with 16 points in a 77-60 win over the Sports Reach Crusaders in an exhibition game Saturday.

She also had five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Women's Volleyball

• Fairfield (Conn.) freshman outside hitter Jazmin Pa'akaula (St. Joseph '04 of Hilo) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week, in helping the Stags to wins over Manhattan and Saint Peter's last week.

Pa'akaula, who earned five MAAC Rookie of the Week selections earlier this season, finished last week with 42 digs, 26 kills and four assists. She is seventh in the MAAC with 4.24 digs per game.

They will play a series of four matches starting today at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Tigers and Warriors will then travel to Hilo on Thursday, Moloka'i on Friday and Kaua'i on Saturday.
